When exposed to fog, silica gel breaks down and its adsorption capacity decreases when revitalized at extreme temperatures. Because of these drawbacks, silica gel is used less than other forms of desiccants. In hot air and gas dehumidification units, silica gel is used in conjunction with silica aluminum.
