Transportation

Dump trucks are used to transport dry bulk materials such as sand, gravel and dirt to and from construction sites. Typically, operators in the dump truck services industry provide services within cities, towns, or other local areas, including adjoining towns and suburbs. Revenues in this industry are expected to increase over the five years ending in 2021, driven by a recovery in construction activity. Downstream construction contractors use industrial vehicles to deliver various inputs to construction sites, in addition to removing excess materials from construction sites. As a result of these positive trends, dump truck industry revenues in the U.S. are expected to grow by 4.7% in 2021 alone.

What Dump Trucks Do And the Advantages for Drivers

Dump truck driving can be very rewarding, but it's not the right job for everyone. If you're considering starting a career as a driver or owner-operator, make sure you carefully consider the pros and cons of dump truck driving before making a decision.

1. Payout Rates

Did we get your attention? Dump truck companies pay drivers an average of $15.57 per hour. Some companies will pay drivers twice the average wage, up to about $30 per hour. Dump truck drivers are paid depending on the company they drive for, their experience and the items they haul. Due to the high demand for their services, drivers are also eligible for company bonuses and incentives. 2016 dump truck drivers in the U.S. were paid above average.
If a person owns several trucks, keeps them in relatively stable jobs, and deducts the necessary expenses needed to operate those trucks, the salary range could easily be much higher. However, they have the responsibility of taking care of their trucks.

2. Low Mileage

Unlike other types of truckers, dump truck drivers' routes are mostly local. Many of the jobs that dump truckers accept are hauling freight from one location to another within a 20-30 mile radius. Rather than traveling across state lines to deliver loads, they are more likely to travel within the boundaries of a given county. Without loads that require multi-day travel, dump truck drivers can sleep in their own beds and stay home with their families instead of being on the road. This could mean drivers taking on multiple loads per day, rather than taking on one load and returning across the country.

3. Opportunity

Dump truck drivers often encounter opportunities. When you take this job, you'll likely be trained in the classroom and on the job. If you are willing to learn the job, there are many different companies that will consider your application.
If you have a few years of experience, then the demand for drivers like you will be higher. Companies are looking for people with experience that they can trust to deliver what they need. Most dump truck jobs require operators to also inspect certain equipment, clean and maintain dump trucks or haul waste. If you have experience doing any or all of these things, then you're already ahead of the game.
