The good news is that in a cast iron rectangular griddle, you’ve found one that can grill steaks like no one else and last for decades, if not decades, that is, if you take care of it properly. Much of cast iron’s ability to last for generations involves seasoning it to prevent rusting and keep it non-stick for a long time. If you’re new to cast iron, don’t worry. With these tips, you’ll learn how to use a cast iron rectangular baking pan in no time.

Using a cast iron rectangular griddle for the first time

Although it is not recommended to use soap on a cast iron rectangular griddle (once or twice a year at most), when the cast iron rectangular skillet

is brand new, you must use it. This is because the factory may leave rust or residue. It’s also good when you’re going to do major seasoning on a cast iron rectangular griddle.

If you don’t know what “seasoning” means, it is a major part of the maintenance of a cast iron rectangular griddle. Seasoning a skillet simply means applying multiple layers of oil to the skillet and then possibly baking the skillet according to this step.

For quick seasoning that works well with a new cast iron skillet, simply wash the new skillet in warm soapy water and dry it with a dry cloth or paper towel. Next, use a paper towel to coat the pan with olive oil or vegetable oil. You may need to wash your new pan several times to remove all the gray residue.

How to Clean and Prepare an Unseasoned Cast Iron Rectangular Skillet

While most new cast iron rectangular skillets are already seasoned, this is not always guaranteed. When this happens, follow these steps to thoroughly clean and prepare an unseasoned cast iron rectangular baking pan.

1. First, heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. While the oven is heating, wash the cast iron rectangular baking pan in warm soapy water.

3. Dry the pan thoroughly with a dry cloth or paper towel.

4. Using your choice of oil, add about 1 to 2 tablespoons to the pan, then use a paper towel to coat the entire cast iron rectangular baking pan, including the exterior and bottom.

5. Place the cast iron rectangular baking pan face down on the center rack of the oven. To catch any drips, place the baking sheet or aluminum foil underneath the stove.

6. Bake for one hour.

7. When finished, turn off the heat and let the pan cool, then take it out with oven mitts.

8. Your pan should have a smooth coating that is not greasy to the touch.

Can vinegar remove rust from cast iron?

While seasoning is mandatory for unseasoned cast iron rectangular skillets, it is optional for pre-seasoned cast iron cookware. However, it is best to do this periodically to help prevent rusting.

However, if you do notice rust, vinegar can be used to remove it.

You will need:

1/2 cup of white vinegar

1/2 cup of water

Abrasive scrubber

Directions:

1. Mix the water and white vinegar in the pan.

2. Let the cast iron rectangular baking pan sit in the mixture for one hour (may need more time if heavily rusted).

3. Using an abrasive scrubber, wipe off the rust stains.

4. After removing the rust, follow the normal seasoning process to finish it off.
