Shogo Electric Ride-On Car by Honda: Spreading Joy Among Hospitalized Kids

Honda’s innovative "Shogo" electric ride-on vehicle is making hospital stays less stressful for young patients. Designed by Honda engineers, Shogo is tailored to navigate hospital corridors, bringing a sense of play and comfort to children. This thoughtful vehicle is filled with interactive features to lift the spirits of its young drivers.

Introduction of Shogo at CHOC Hospital

CHOC Hospital, a key partner of Honda, is currently utilizing Shogo. Hundy Liu, the manager of national automobile advertising for American Honda Motor Co., Inc., mentioned, "Creating Shogo to help support these patients during what can be a stressful time in the hospital has been a labor of love for our passionate team of Honda associates and we’re especially proud to introduce Shogo during this holiday season at CHOC." Liu highlighted the joy that Shogo brings to young patients, making their hospital experience more positive.

The Design and Mission Behind Shogo

Randall Smock, a senior exterior designer at American Honda, played a crucial role in Shogo’s development. Reflecting on his own childhood experiences in hospitals, Smock remarked, "Every element of Shogo was designed to accommodate different needs of young children, making it as easy as possible to get in and out, simple to drive, and for the entire experience to leave them a bit happier."

CHOC’s Role in Refinement

CHOC was instrumental in validating the safety and practicality of Shogo. Brianne Ortiz, the manager of the Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Department at CHOC, expressed, "Our team greatly appreciates Honda bringing innovative solutions that support our ongoing commitment to providing an exceptional patient experience and infusing joy into a patient’s stay." She noted the dedication of the Honda team in ensuring Shogo was both safe and perfect for their young patients.

Technical Features and Practical Details

Shogo, which means "soaring into the future" in Japanese, is designed for children aged 4 to 9. It boasts power controls for easy driving, go/stop mechanisms on the steering wheel, and a speed range controlled by caregivers. Built with safety in mind, it features a no-door design for easy access, child-friendly steering controls, and soft, easy-to-clean surfaces. Additionally, Shogo includes practical elements like an IV pole holder, a push bar for manual operation, a toy bucket, cup holders, a customizable license plate, and a center horn with various sound options.

Testing and Collaboration

Honda engineers collaborated closely with CHOC staff, testing Shogo in a simulated hospital hallway to ensure its safety and functionality. This collaboration was vital for the successful integration of Shogo into the hospital environment.

Support for Honda’s Environmental Vision

Developing Shogo as an electric vehicle aligns with Honda’s vision of increasing electrified vehicles, aiming for 40% of sales by 2030 and 100% by 2040. The upcoming Honda Prologue, set for release in 2024, marks a significant step in this direction.

Past Initiatives with CHOC

Honda's relationship with CHOC includes several innovative projects to brighten young patients’ experiences. In 2016, Honda used virtual reality to create “Candy Cane Lane” for patients. The following years saw initiatives like a virtual snow globe experience and the “Magic Snow Globe,” further enhancing patient experiences through technology.
