9 1/2" I-joist or 11 7/8"?

I discussed with my builder the possibility of using 9 1/2" I-joists instead of the planned 11 7/8" for the second story floor joists. The thinner ceiling would allow us to eliminate a tread in our stairs, providing a more comfortable run/rise, as Rennovator8 suggested in a previous thread. Both options would be spaced 16 inches on center. The maximum span is 16', covering the master bath and closet (without a tub), while the rest of the house has spans of 15' or 14'.

Here is a PDF of the specifications. The builder plans to use L360 joists, and I assume we would use the heaviest 9" joists: http://woodbywy.com/document/tj-/

According to the specifications, the 11" I-joist appears significantly stronger, with a maximum vertical shear of 1,705 lbs compared to 1,330 lbs for the 9". That's the only specification I fully understand. If the builder approves, should I be comfortable with the smaller joists? Thanks!
